TO SET UP …

1. Using the tape and scissors, turn your box into something similar to the photo on the page here, with edges round it to keep a ball from rolling off.

2. Cut holes in the box (as many as you like) and write a number next to each hole.

3. Pop the box on to something, so it is off the ground (we used a couple of chairs).

TO PLAY …

1. Explain to your child that they have to try to roll the ball into one of the holes.

2. You lie under the box, and when you call out ‘Go!’ your child rolls the ball.

3. When the ball comes through a hole, you have to try to catch it.

4. Your child writes down the number of the hole it went through and then rolls again.

5. They then write down the second number.

6. When they’ve got two numbers, together create a number sentence. So if the ball went through 1 and 3 you might write 1 + 3 = ___, or if it went through 6 and 4 you might write 6 – 4 = ___ (depending on the numeracy skills you’re working on).

7. Encourage your child to work out the answer to the number sentence.

8. Swap places, and they try to catch the ball from underneath while you write out the next number sentence. (They can help you work out the answer!)
